If you want to become a truck driver, you should first take a course in commercial trucking. These courses last anywhere from six or seven weeks up to about ten weeks. The school may also have some classroom work and may provide for an apprenticeship period at the end of the course. These are not required at this time, but there is some speculation that there will soon be federal regulations making the added studies compulsory. For now, at the end of your course, you will be required to take a Federally-mandated test to obtain a commercial drivers license (CDL) that will enable you to drive trucks anywhere in the United States.

Finding a Truck Driver Job

Once you have your CDL and become a truck driver, you are ready to find your first driving job. Your school may provide placement assistance, and it’s a good idea to find that out up front. They may, in fact, have a website that is visited regularly by hundreds of truck driver recruiters.

You should also make sure you have a resume listing your commercial driving training. Update the resume frequently, including any specialized training or experience you have gained. You can also find a truck driving job on the Internet where you will have access to thousands of postings by paying a small monthly fee. You will also be able to post your resume on many of these sites where, again, hundreds of recruiters will see it.
